Does The Holy Qur'an grant permission to Muslim men to beat their wives?

Rev. David N. Hughes • General
On September 3,2012 The Washington Post ran a story entitled "Muslims speed-date to find mates"

From time to time the American main stream media will run a story in an attempt to show the Muslim population in a peaceful and favorable situation. This is done to negate the 9-11 attack on the world trade center, and to show that Muslims are a peace loving people, and Islam should not be judged by a few "extremist." Such a story was run in the Washington Post on September 3, 2012 entitled "Muslims speed-date to find mates."

Does The Holy Qur'an allow Muslim husbands to beat their wives? Allah, the God of Islam is the author of the Qur'an, given to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. One question I have been asked on a continual basis is the God of the Bible and the God of The Holy Qur'an are they one and the same? Sadly there are Christians who believe that they are.

Just what does the Bible say concerning the relationship that a husband should have with his wife? Paul writes in the book of Ephesians the following:

Husband love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.

                                                          Ephesians 5:25 NKJ

So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves wife loves himself.

                                                                                                                                   Ephesians 5:28 NKJ

This type of relationship is not encouraged in The Holy Qur'an.

YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

PICKTHAL: Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great

SHAKIR: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

Each Islamic scholar has translated the same passage. Pickthal substituted the words "scourge them" in the place of "beat them." The words that are in parenthesis were added to the passage and are not found in the original text.

Allah and the God Christians call Father cannot be one and the same.

Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve ...but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. Joshua 25:15

Who was Joshua's Lord? The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
